While many would call him an adventurer and some might even call him a hero, Connal sees himself as nothing more than a simple woodcarver. He even daydreams of a time when he might be able to just return to the town in which he was born and start work as a woodcarver once again. Yet Connal knows that he can do things that others can not. That alone means he has certain responsibilities to help others who need it. As much as he might wish to return to a simpler life, he's aware that such a life is, at least for now, just beyond his reach. In fact doing so would just be selfish when so many people out there need help. Sure, maybe Connal won't be able to help them all, but he'll sure as hell try.
That said, he does appreciate the wonders of the adventuring life. In his travels he's met people, seen things, and gained worldly experience that he'll never forget. None of these things would have ever happened if he never left his home. The act of speaking with animals, a simple spell that many spellcasters might see as simple parlor trick, fills Connal with no small amount of joy. You can bet that when Connal finds an animal he's never seen before he'll attempt speaking with it just because he can. These simple pleasures are things that he holds onto as he learns just how dark the world around him can truly be. This is his bastion from the terrors he faces.
Unfortunately that doesn't always work. Connal has seen some truly horrifying things. Things that stick with him no matter how hard he tries to shake them. Being stuck in the Underdark has deeply affected him. Nights not filled with nightmares are rare. More than once he wakes up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. He's even begun developing a fear of being alone in the dark, not simply being out at night, but finding himself alone in true, utter blackness. Even more unfortunately, Connal barely speaks of this to anyone. Instead of getting help with his problem he simply sits on it and hopes that, with time, the nightmares and horrific visions will eventually just go away.
In fact talking with people is something Connal has trouble with in general. It's not that he's anti-social, in fact he enjoys being around people. Connal just finds it difficult thinking of what to say or when to say it. Many times when he finds himself growing nervous he starts babbling uncontrollably which only makes him more nervous and the babbling continues until someone tells him to shut up. Problems like this are why he remains so tight lipped about himself. Connal just doesn't trust himself much in conversation with another humanoid being. Even among close friends he trips over his words and gets himself tongue-tied. This is why he rather speak with his actions than his words. The man just doesn't trust him mouth.
Actions always speak louder than words in Connal's mind. Treat people with dignity and respect and Conall will treat you the same way. Act like a terrible person and Conall wants nothing to do with you. Words are tricky. They hide things that Conall doesn't always see, but when you pay attention to someone's actions it almost always reveals the truth about a person. At least that's Connal believes...well to a certain extent anyway.
Conall is something of a gentle giant. He rarely argues with others since it makes him uncomfortable. Instead he prefers to just smile and nod even if he silently disagrees. He tries not to let things bother him to avoid arguing and making himself and others upset. Still Connal sometimes loses his temper, but when he does he immediately regrets doing so. It bothers him knowing he might upset someone. His anger is a rare thing, saved for those he finds truly cruel and depraved, like the gnolls.
You see there's one type a people that Connal holds no love for. In fact it's safe to say that he actually hates them. Not just an intense dislike but honest, actual hatred. They are the gnolls. In the past Connal witnessed these hyena-like humanoid beings commit atrocities that he can neither forget or forgive. As far as they're concerned killing them does everyone a favor. They're nothing but monsters and he wants them gone.
